Moodboard Monday: Purple

A long while ago, I was tasked with making #moodboards for work. I decided to do some research on the Psychology of colours. It turned out to be an incredibly fun, creatively soothing exercise for me. Not being much in the mood to write of late, I lay in the bath wondering what I could do to inspire some blog posts. One of the things my therapist told me is to remember things that invoke good feelings and repeat them. It was then that I decided to write a series of colour-related posts.

I think it fitting to begin with my favourite colour: Purple.

Many people will often say that purple is a colour loved by those who are sexually frustrated. I suppose to a point, it may be a valid point, because sex toys often come in purple or shades thereof, but I prefer to think of it as a colour associated with stature, and according to this article, purple is regarded as a royal colour.

I’ve tried to think back to where my fascination with purple began, but I can’t fix a specific point in time. The only memory I can think of is one where a friend’s mom complimented me on a purple shirt I happened to be wearing (after being coaxed into wearing something different – ‘not blue or black’ for a change). I found that people noticed me and that a dusting of a purple-shaded eyeshadow can be a great pick-me-up.

As I’m typing this post, I fondly remember one of my High School English teachers sharing with us her love of Alice Walker’s book, The Color Purple. It formed part of our literature curriculum and to enhance our experience of the book, we watched the movie too. I don’t remember much of the book nor the movie, except for Whoopi Goldberg being cast as Celie.

Last year, I was approached by Elizabeth, who had in turn been approached by a friend… the latter’s daughter had to do a 1920’s-inspired photo shoot for a school project and needed models. At first, I was sceptical, but I threw caution to the wind and took the plunge. Four of us were the ‘flappers’ for the day; Elizabeth and the other two (much younger gals) wore black, with a pop of colour. Me? I went all out. In purple. And I totally rocked it!

On that note, I’ll end this post – have a royal week everyone. Go forth like the kings and queens you are!
